The practical verdict
Exam Beacon is a close product alternative if you want a diagnostic to feed a school-focused preparation plan. Its monthly Core and exam-date-based ToExam purchase are different budgeting choices. Smart Cub Learning is worth testing for a family wanting a visible lesson path, saved answer review and a monthly family subscription. Compare the actual follow-up to the diagnostic, not just the initial report.
Where Exam Beacon may suit you
- You want to evaluate the plan produced from a diagnostic.
- The scheduled Core sessions fit your child's weekly routine.
- A quoted ToExam package covers the right period and schools for your family.
Where Smart Cub may suit you
- Your child wants to begin a lesson without completing a diagnostic first.
- You want one family subscription covering up to 4 children.
- You want to compare the learner's completed work with the adult progress view.

Look inside Smart Cub Learning
Real screens from our current staging application. These are synthetic demonstration accounts, not customer records or evidence of educational outcomes.

The adult view of learning
An adult can inspect subject and skill progress in a separate parent workspace. Values shown are synthetic demonstration data, not admission predictions.

Judge the report by the next action
A report can look detailed while leaving a parent unsure what to do tonight. After a diagnostic, identify one weak topic, find the recommended task and check whether the explanation actually addresses that gap. The route from report to learning is more revealing than the report's colours.
Use the same test in Smart Cub. Open a piece of finished work, inspect the explanation and locate the next relevant lesson or revision task. Do not interpret either provider's estimate as an official admission score.
Compare the two purchasing models carefully
A monthly subscription is easy to price for a known period. A package lasting until an exam can be attractive, but its value depends on the date, scope and what happens if the family changes target schools. Ask for a complete quote and keep the end date with it.
For Exam Beacon Core, check the session limit and mock scheduling. For Smart Cub, check that the available lessons and assessment formats match your needs. An unlimited activity allowance is not a guarantee that every specialist format is present.
Check which product you are buying
Exam Papers Plus links to Exam Beacon for personalised preparation and separately sells other resources. Record which account, invoice and entitlement delivers the service you want. Do not assume that a paper purchase unlocks the full platform or that a platform subscription includes every separate shop item.
The same principle applies when using Smart Cub with a tutor or extra paper packs. Give each purchase a clear job and review actual use before adding another service.
Try the teaching, right here
Explore a real Smart Cub exercise with your child. This public sample is not an assessment: nothing is saved to a learner account and it does not award mastery.
Compare the amount you would actually pay
Change the preparation period, learner count and plan. Annual and multi-month commitments are counted in full, even when you intend to use fewer months.
Core is £49.00 monthly. ToExam is a separate one-off quote tied to start date and target exam; the advertised starting amount should not be used as a fixed total.

Exam Beacon · Core, monthly

Core is per learner according to the reviewed terms. The calculator does not estimate ToExam: enter your actual whole-period quote if comparing that offer. Complete billing periods are counted. Family licences are rounded up; unverified discounts are excluded. Price alone does not compare teaching quality or admission chances.
