Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls share the South West Herts Consortium’s academic and music tests, but each school makes its own admissions decision. Neither is wholly selective. Most Year 7 places are community places, and a test score is only one part of an application. The numbers below come from the schools’ determined policies for September 2027 entry: Watford Boys’ policy and the school-hosted Watford Girls’ policy.
If your child sat the tests in September 2026, the cycle-specific consortium calendar lists 15 October around midday for results. Both schools’ 2027 policies give an approximate date: the boys’ school says on or around 15 October and the girls’ school says on or around mid-October. Use the Parent Portal and result email for your child's actual result date. If the result is missing, check the registered email account and contact the Consortium Administration Team. The academic score is used to rank eligible applicants for each school’s academic places; it is not an offer. Music places use a separate aptitude test, while community places follow the school’s address and oversubscription criteria.
How many places are selected by test?
- Watford Grammar School for Boys: 224 Year 7 places. The policy designates 146 community places, up to 56 academic places and up to 22 music places.
- Watford Grammar School for Girls: 210 Year 7 places. The policy designates 137 community places, up to 52 academic places and up to 21 music places.
The schools have separate admission policies. A child considered for a community place does not need an academic test score merely because Grammar appears in the school’s name. Each policy says children applying only for community or music places need not sit the academic test. The community routes have ordered criteria. After children with an Education, Health and Care Plan, the policies list looked-after children, a limited nearest-home allocation, qualifying staff and siblings, then distance. Read the relevant policy before assuming an address or sibling link guarantees a place.
The schools recognise siblings at each other’s school as well as siblings at their own school, with conditions. For example, the Boys’ policy includes a sister at Watford Girls, while the Girls’ policy includes a brother at Watford Boys. Both exclude siblings who first joined in the sixth form from those sibling criteria. The order of criteria matters, so use the policy for the school you intend to name.
What does a score mean for an academic place?
Both schools use the consortium’s verbal reasoning and mathematics tests for their academic places. Their policies say there is no fixed minimum score for admission: eligible applicants are ranked by standardised test score for the academic places in their address group. A result is therefore not a universal Watford pass mark and does not guarantee an offer. The consortium’s historical-score information shows earlier allocations; it cannot tell you the last score that will receive an offer in 2027.
Each school divides its specialist places between the Watford area and the rest of the admission area:
- Watford Boys: 34 academic and 13 music places are reserved for the Watford area; 22 academic and 9 music places for the rest of the admission area.
- Watford Girls: 31 academic and 13 music places are reserved for the Watford area; 21 academic and 8 music places for the rest of the admission area.
The policies define those areas by postcode sector, rather than by the town name on an address. For example, both put WD3 3 in the Watford area, while WD3 1 and WD3 4 to 9 fall in the rest of the admission area. The full sector lists and the schools’ normal-home-address rules are in the two policies linked above. Check your exact postcode sector and evidence of address. Applications from outside the admission area are considered for specialist places only if eligible in-area applicants do not fill them.
Check which of those two specialist-place areas lists your postcode sector. This lookup uses the schools’ 2027-entry policies; it does not check the other admission criteria or predict an offer.
This part of the guide checks which 2027 Watford specialist-place area lists your postcode sector. It works in your browser.
Which forms must you complete?
For 2027 entry, both schools ask for a School Information Form by 31 October 2026. Watford Boys’ policy links its online form on the first page; Watford Girls’ Year 7 admissions page links its 2027 form. You must also apply through the council where your child lives, naming the school on that council’s secondary application. If you live outside Hertfordshire, check your home council’s application deadline rather than assuming its online form closes at the same time. A consortium test registration, a school form and a home-council application serve different purposes; submitting one does not submit the others.
Hertfordshire residents can use the council’s secondary admissions page, which says families can list up to four schools for 2027 entry. Put the schools in the order you genuinely prefer. The council says schools do not see the preference ranking and uses it to decide which offer to make if a child qualifies for more than one school. Our school application order planner can help you check that list, but the official form is the application.
What if you think the academic papers were marked incorrectly?
The consortium accepts academic-paper marking review requests from noon on 15 October to 2 November 2026 and lists a £50 administration fee. It expects to reply after the closing date. A marking review is separate from an appeal against refusal of a school place. Submit the council application and any required school form on time without waiting for a review result.
For a wider comparison with the five other consortium schools and Dame Alice Owen’s separate test, read our Hertfordshire admissions guide. Families planning for September 2028 entry should use these 2027 policies to understand the schools’ routes, then check the consortium and school websites for the next cycle’s dates and determined policies before registering.
